ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

The organisers of ICTD2010 and Royal Holloway, University of London, are committed to organising a successful conference that recognises its social, economical and environmental impact on diverse communities, and complies with all legislation and regulations. The objective is to provide a high quality standard for all participants at the conference, while considering the impact on the surrounding environment and local community in all its actions.

What the College and the ICTD2010 committee do:

By working closely with the Carbon Trust, the College has committed to reduce its carbon footprint by 34 percent by 2020, based on 1990 levels. The following actions are taken to accomplish these goals:

  • The College works to an ecological management plan to maintain the green and leafy campus. Furthermore, several projects are established to involve students and staff, such as allotment plots on campus and ‘switch off’ competitions amongst halls of residence;
  • The College is replacing inefficient light bulbs and fittings, and examining building heating and cooling;
  • The College is considering the generation of electricity on site;
  • There are communal facilities for recycling paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, drink cans, food tins, glass, batteries, printer cartridges and electrical equipment across campus;
  • The Fairtrade Foundation awarded the College Fairtrade status in December 2005. All tea and coffee served on campus is Fairtrade and there are many Fairtrade products on sale in the College Shop.

The conference organisers are committed to minimising environmental impact and making resource efficiency a core requirement for the delivery of ICTD2010.

  • The ICTD2010 conference will be held in the Windsor Building Conference Centre, a state of the art venue opened in 2007. The Windsor Building is a C-rated building according to the Display Energy Certificates (DEC). The 08/09 carbon footprint was approximately 180 tonnes, resulting in a 69 efficiency rating, much lower than the average 100 for UK buildings;
  • Energy efficient measures (motion sensors, low energy lighting and water reducing measures in toilets) are in place in the Windsor Building;
  • The auditorium, seating 400 delegates, is fitted with Energy Star accredited equipment;
  • Food sourcing is considered in the purchase of food and beverages provided to delegates. Where possible, products will be Fairtrade, locally sourced, free range and/or organic;
  • Only recycled paper is used and the organisers are committed to using as little paper as possible.

What delegates can do:

Delegates are encouraged to help the College and the ICTD2010 organisers to meet their environmental targets. We wish to provide all participants with the following tips to consider when taking part in the conference:

  • Traveling to the College will have a major impact on the environment. Many airlines, or other associations such as Sustainable Travel International, provide opportunities to offset your flight;
  • When using off-campus accommodation, please consider sharing taxis or taking public transportation to the College;
  • The College only uses recycled paper, and the organisation is committed to reducing paper usage. Please consider the environment before printing, and if you do choose to print please use double-sided printing;
  • The organisers are committed to turning off unused equipment at all times. Please help by switching off equipment, rather than leaving it on stand-by;
  • Since the weather can change on a daily basis in England, delegates are encouraged to take suitable clothing to the conference so that they do not feel too cold or hot. If too hot, please open a window if possible, instead of utilising the air-conditioning. If too cold, please bring some extra clothing.
  • Facilities for refilling water bottles will be provided on site. Delegates are encouraged to use these instead of buying multiple bottles.
